From our Visitor Research Project carried out in 2012, Choose Abingdon knows that once a visitor has come to Abingdon-on-Thames, there is a very high likelihood of them enjoying their visit and returning again and again. We also found out that for many people it was an event that induced them to visit the town in the first place. However staging events just for the sake of it is an unsustainable approach, consuming huge budgets. Our strategy is to encourage genuine grass-roots events to grow and flourish, organised by volunteer enthusiasts who know their own interest groups well and can create events that will stand the test of time. By offering advice and contacts, the use of our gazebos and community shop, and help finding grant funding or sponsorship, we can support our community groups in producing a calendar of town events that appeals to a wide range of visitors and local residents, and makes the town a lively and vibrant place to spend time.
In 2013 the Partnership supported the Freewheeling Cycling Club to take their Spring Rides Cycling Festival to a new level. It was a great day with so much going on in the Market Place and over 400 riders taking part. Watch the video.
