The Arts Society Abingdon is holding its monthly lecture on Wednesday 19th June 2019 10.30am and 2.00pm, at Trinity Church, Conduit Road, Abingdon, OX14 1DB.


Treasurers of the Black Tent – Antique Tribal Rugs and Dowry Weaving

of the Persian and Central Asian Nomads by  Brian MacDonald


You will be taken on a journey beginning in Outer Mongolia in the 5th century BC, be introduced to the nomadic tribes of Turkey (the cradle of weaving), the Caucasus, Persia and Afghanistan, and their woven rugs and dowry bags. Particular emphasis on the 19th century skills of the women producing these exquisite works of woven art illustrating the hostile landscapes and primitive living conditions of these nomads.



Non-Members welcome, £6.00.  The lectures are one hour long, but leave extra time for announcements etc.
