Rotary Dragon Boat Festival

Sunday, 3rd September10:00am-5:00pm

Rotary Dragon Boat Festival is an annual event organised by The Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper.  It is a charity fund raising event held on the River Thames at Rye Farm Meadow in Abingdon.

Dragon Boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition, and is one of the world's most competitive water sports.  There will be around 20 teams taking part, with added attractions such as a fun fair, food and drink stalls and a craft fair taking place at the same time

A Dragon Boat is 40 foot long and decorated with a Chinese dragon head and tail. Each needs a crew of 16 rowers and a drummer to keep good rhythm and a fast speed.

Races are a 250 metre sprint along the river with up to 4 boats taking part in each heat. The aim is to achieve the fastest time, with the 4 fastest teams competing in the final to become the Champion for 2017.

It is a great way to raise money for charity by teams getting sponsorship for taking part, giving up their time and importantly having fun!

No previous experience or training is required and it is open to all ages
