Abingdon Michaelmas Fair will take place on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th October from 12 noon to 11pm each day.  The Michaelmas Fair is the longest street fair in Europe, running from the Market Place, through the High Street, The Square and the full length of Ock Street.  This historic street fair has its origins in the shortage of labour following  the Black Death of 1348/9.  The Fair was a hiring fair, the equivalent of today's employment agencies and online job websites. Swan Upping
Published on: 21 Jul 2017
Swan Upping plays an important role in the conservation of the mute swan and involves The Queen’s Swan Warden collecting data, assessing the health of young cygnets and examining them for any injuries. Cygnets are extremely vulnerable at this early stage in their development and Swan Upping affords an opportunity to help both adults and cygnets that might otherwise go untreated. This year the Royal Swan Uppers, who wear the scarlet uniform of Her Majesty The Queen, are due to arrive in Abingdon-on-Thames at  the Brdige at apprximately 5pm on Friday 21st July.  For further details click here.

The processing plant is now able to accept thin plastic bags, such as carrier bags, bread bags, paper wrappings, or normal pedal bin liners. Residents can also continue... more

It was originally intended that the Community Led Plan would be launched with consultation events in July 2017.  However matters have been delayed for a number of reasons not least of which was the extended period of “purdah” relating to the County and General elections which severely restricted our ability progress matters , issue publicity and engage the public.  We have therefore postponed the launch events until September.  This will give a longer lead time to publicise the events so we can have a meaningful consultation and ensure as many people as possible are able to get involved.
