Market Place crowds enjoying the fireworks on Saturday night

The festive crowds turned out in force for the Abingdon Christmas Extravaganza yesterday. The parade set off up Stert Street at 11.45am led by a bagpipe band, and complete with stiltwalker, Father Christmas, Cinderella characters, Town Councillors, Morris Dancers, Air Cadets, majorettes ...and a donkey. The entertainments continued all afternoon, and were spread around the town centre with reindeer, Punch and Judy Shows and craft stalls along Bath Street, main stage in the Market Place, Mayor's Pamper Afternoon at the Guildhall, family activities in St Nicolas' Church and a petting zoo in... more

The reindeer will be here in the morning! ..and the baby animals..and the stiltwalkers...plus a community event that so many people are getting involved in. Take advantage of the all day free parking and come down before 11.30am to see the parade and then enjoy the entertainments on Bath Street, Bridge Street and the Market Place. Showing off on Charter Day at the Museum The children of John Mason School, Abingdon, were surprised to find on arrival to the museum galleries, a series of historical figures explaining and exploring the history of late Tudor Abingdon. In the main gallery William and Lady Blacknall and Lady Stonehouse explored the dissolution of the Abbey and Chantries, and development of the town charter. Upstairs the quarrelsome John Blacknall and Sir George Stonehouse argued over their rights to the River Thames, as well as the origins and history of the Monks Map followed by a special opening of the roof... more

The new Crown and Thistle in Bridge Street

Last night the Crown & Thistle re-opened in style, even welcoming fellow innkeepers from the Kings Head and Bell to a huge launch party packed with Abingdon traders; Abingdon councillors; builders, architects and designers who had worked on the project, and new staff and management. The new owners were proud to offer tours of the newly restored building and luxurious bedrooms. The menus have been greeted with excitement by the foodies of the town and include a huge range of choices for those on special diets.

Fun in the Park and Music in the Park - 7 June 2014

The Council is again organising its annual Fun in the Park and Music in the Park on Saturday 7th June. Fun in the Park takes place in the Abbey Grounds from 11am to 3pm. Entrance to this event is free and attractions include sports taster sessions, arts and crafts, community groups and much more. Later in the afternoon, the Abbey Grounds is transformed and the “Music in the Park” event takes place from 5.30 pm (gates open at 4.30pm). The Town Council is organising a Flood Fair, with the aim to let people know What You Can Do In The Event Of A Flood. There will be participants from a number of agencies and organisations, with information and display stands with helpful suggestions on how to protect you, your family and your home. The event will take place from 6.00pm to 8.00pm on Thursday 24th October 2013 in the Guildhall (the Roysse Room).
