Richard III abingdon museum lecture battle bosworth war of the roses

On February 19 BBC historical advisor Gareth Howell returns to Abingdon to deliver another of his engaging talks on military history. The Amey Theatre in conjunction with Abingdon Museum play host, and this year Gareth conducts a historic examination of the War of the Roses.  Tickets are available from the Amey Theatre website: Amey Theatre Bookings  or can be booked at Abingdon Museum on 01235 523703 Gareth has also recently conducted research for the BBC into the Home Guard in the UK, to tie in with the release of the new Dad's Army film, the report of which is due for release later in 2016... more

Visitors are invited to see a stunning display of artwork from two Berkshire artists, Bill Pike and Diccon Dadey. The pair have teamed up with Abingdon Museum in creating scenes of movement and motion found in nature, from capturing the moment of ducks landing in metallic sculpture, to the rippling reflections of the Thames at Abingdon.  The exhibition is located on the first floor sessions gallery and the museum is free to visit Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm, and Sunday 11am-5pm.  On February 20th visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artists to find out how they produce their wonderful... more

  This Saturday is the quarterly market where local food producers, craftworkers and retailers sell their goods in Abingdon Market Place. The Local Excellence Market gives Abingdon shoppers the chance to sample foods, beers and crafts from Oxfordshire and the nearest counties. The market starts at 9am and packs up at 2pm, regardless of the weather! Come down and check it out. It's always a busy enviroment with lots to see and buy. The Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme

Background There are 4,500 properties in Oxford at a 1% or higher annual risk of flooding. This figure could rise to nearly 6,000 by the year 2080 with the predicted effects of climate change. Major roads, railway lines, schools and businesses could also be affected by flooding. The Environment Agency carries out regular maintenance activities and operates its assets to reduce the flood risk as much as possible, reducing this to 1,800 properties at risk. Recycle your Christmas tree

If you're not sure what to do with your Christmas tree after taking it down, why not bring it to the Market Place on Saturday 9th January between 9am-3pm where Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council and TVE Hire & Sales will happily recycle it for you! The woodchip produced will help to line our woodland pathways.

Beating the Bounds 2016

Come along and celebrate the New Year by taking part in the 2016 Beating the Bounds walk.  Walkers will meet at 11.30am in the Market Place on New Year's Day then will proceed to walk along the Towns 1556 Boundaries.  Get outside for some fresh air after all the eating and drinking of Christmas! - and join in this community event that upholds the ancient tradition of "beating the bounds".  All welcome.
