Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council are once again organising the popular “Music in the Park” event.  Music in the Park has taken place in the Abbey Grounds every year since its inception as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, attracting large crowds with 3,500 wristbands being made available in the spring. Recycle Your Christmas Tree! This is a reminder that as usual, now that the Christmas festivities are concluded, you can bring your Christmas tree to the Market Place to be recycled into woodchip. This annual event takes place on the Saturday after Twelfth Night and this year is scheduled for Saturday 5th January from 9am to 3pm. This service is provided by the Town Council. The woodchip produced will help to line our woodland pathways and provide compost for allotments and flowerbeds. Boundary Walk A New Year’s Day walk of the ancient parish of Abingdon-on-Thames leaves Market Place at 11.00 am. The walk will be led by Councillor Helen Pighills and Member of the Abingdon Guild of Town Criers, Patrick Bird. The walk lasts approx 2.5 hours. Join us for a  walk to bring in the Year 2019.

The 1960s extension to Abingdon’s Guildhall – known as the Abbey Hall – is being brought back to life with a launch date this December.  The building will be transformed with state-of-the-art projection and surround sound equipment, cinema seating and a finely-stocked bar. People who have difficulty paying their energy bills might be able to take advantage of the Warm Home Discount, a new kind of grant offered by the government and energy suppliers.  The Warm Home Discount is a scheme that provides people on low incomes with a single discount of £140 on their winter electricity bill. (You might be able to get the discount applied to your gas bill instead - contact your supplier to find out.)  The discount will not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment. Motorists in the Vale of White Horse can enjoy free parking in district council car parks on certain days in the run up to Christmas. 100th Commemoration of the World War One Armistice Please see below a list of events organised by the Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council to commemorate the First World War Centenary.  Saturday 6th October – Abingdon County Hall Museum – Exhibition on the roll of the Indian Army during the Great War which runs until 28th October 2018.  This exhibition will be joined with the “Great War Propaganda” exhibition which showcases and explores the imagery of wartime conscription and propaganda poster 1914-1918.  This exhibition runs until 23rd December 2018. Community Grants Scheme This is a reminder that Abingdon Town Council have a community grant scheme in place with a budget of £18,000 available for grants for the financial year commencing 1st April 2018 and applications may now be made for funding. Last year grants were awarded from the Community Grants scheme to 23 different organisations. Grant applications are considered by the Community Services Committee at its meetings, which take place four times each year.
