Enjoy the Marketplace

Abingdon-on-Thames is a market town that still proudly upholds the tradition of the Market Place as a focus of town life. The Market Place is central, easily reached, and is the scene of important occasions and music festivals but also of weekly and monthly markets, fairs and community events. On any day of the week it's a lovely place to drink tea or a cappuccino in the sunshine, catch up with friends or plan a day out in the town and surrounding area.

There are activities all year round, more in the May to October period. Look out for Music in the Park wristband sales which are also available on line or weekdays from Roysse Court the town offices. 12th May a showcase of the ATOM the Festival of Science and Technology has a lot for all the family although the main festival is in March.

Saturday 19th May is one of the first live music events of the season with real cake and fine music Abbey Brass 'Bakes and Brass' alongside Abingdon Bowls Club celebrating 50 years at Albert Park. In the coming weeks they have opportunities for people to try bowling on their greens.

Save the Children local branch needs support and donations for its event on 9th June.

16th June is thr tradition of Election of the Mayor of Ock Street a meeting between the Mock Mayor and the new town Mayor elected on 9th May this year. Polling for Mock Mayor starts in the morning. Visitng Morris Bampton Traditional and also Berkshire Bedlam will be here times close to Market Place are between 10.45 am and 1.00 pm and again for half an hour after 7.00 pm.

Bank Holiday Monday 28th May members of our town Civic Society Friends of Abingdon offer a selection of walks on themes. There are walks and quizzes on their own information and there will be a desk in the Market Place at which you can ask about the walks and join one or two.

The next Local Excellence Market on a Saturday is 30th June, in addition to the Monday and every third Friday events. Note no Monday Charter Market on the 7th and 28th May Bank Holidays.

Festivals such as Yeah Baby in 7th July the Craft Fair 28th July and Abingdon Town Band 11th August note in the diary now and lookout for more on the Oxfordshire Chilli Festival.

More on Autumn events later with Local Excellence on Michaelmas Day 29th September and after Abingdon Fair 8th and 9th October there will be October and November events in commemoration of the 1918 end of war which had such an impact on town and nation.

Christmas Extravaganza, organised by the Abingdon-on-Thames Chamber of Commerce is on Saturday 1st December 2018. Information on the parade late morning, special shopping deals and a few surprises will be announced on www.abingdonchamber.co.uk
