Heritage Weekend

Heritage Open is mainly in September nationwide and in other parts of Europe. Due to its popularity some towns and heritage locations are varying or increasing the length of their period of special events. In 2019 the town's highly experienced civic society Friends of Abingdon will be co ordinating events. This society is open to anyone who loves Abingdon and its heritage.

Heritage Open makes a very interesting period in which to visit Abingdon-on-Thames as many heritage properties may be open that might normally be closed, including private homes.  Some places are only open by appointment,. Part of the unique St Helen’s almshouses which are still in use today are open in certain years along with houses of mediaeval origin in town, picking up on a theme for the year. In addition, the historical and civic societies of the town provide guided walks and exhibitions.

Early September is the latest opportunity to take a boat from Oxford at 9.00 am to arrive in Abingdon at 11.00 am or get to Oxford for the afternoon cruise. Boats from Abingdon heading up river to Radley, Iffley and Oxford are 11.15 am and 4.45 pm departure from the down river side of Abingdon Bridge, near Annie's tearooms.
