Heritage Weekend

Heritage Open is mainly on the second weekend in September nationwide and in other parts of Europe. Due to its popularity some towns and heritage locations are opening one other weekend in September as well.

This makes a very interesting weekend to visit Abingdon-on-Thames as many heritage properties are open that would normally be closed, including private homes.  Some places are only open by appointment,. Part of the unique St Helen’s almshouses which are still in use today are open in certain years along with houses of mediaeval origin in town, picking up on a theme for the year. In addition, the historical and civic societies of the town provide guided walks, exhibitions, and sometimes period costume.

Saturday will include talks and special activities and some of these are already on the website and in the Museum's programme. Sunday there is a programme of local history walks.

Passenger boats on the Thames start late May. Note this weekend is the latest opportunity to take a boat from Oxford at 9.00 am to arrive in Abingdon at 11.00 am or get to Oxford for the afternoon cruise. Boats from Abingdon heading up river to Radley, Iffley and Oxford are 11.15 am and 4.45 pm departure from the down river side of Abingdon Bridge, near Annie's tearooms.
