Faces of the English Court: Hans Holbein at the Court of Henry VIII
The Arts Society Abingdon are presenting an ONLINE Webinar on 21st April 2021 – Faces of the English Court: Hans Holbein at the Court of Henry VIII. Lecturer Justin Reay will speak at 11.00 and then again at 14.00 on Webinar.
In 1526 the German artist Hans Holbein the Younger arrived in London with a letter of introduction from Erasmus of Rotterdam to Sir Thomas More. With this contact Holbein came within the ambit of More’s intellectual circle and the royal court. During his second stay in England from 1532, he was appointed King’s Painter. His commissions included designs for festive tableaux, jewellery and architectural features, and portraits of members of the court, for which his delicate study drawings show Holbein’s changing approach to portraiture.
